District music contest was a great success for the SEM music department. We travelled to Burwell on Friday, April 21st. We had 15 entries at district music contest with no scratches. This speaks to the level of commitment we had on the part of our students. I have listed the results of the entries below. The Jazz band received a plaque for having all three judges award superior ratings. One judge gave a perfect score.
I believe that two of our students deserve special recognition for their accomplishments and time spent preparing for districts. Jenaya Pierce received Superior ratings at FKC music contest for her vocal solo, quartet, piano trio, and marimba duet. At districts she received Superior ratings on her vocal solo, quartet, and marimba duet. She also received a Superior rating as a part of the concert band playing bells and in jazz band playing the keyboard in our rhythm section. Madison Bosak received Superior ratings at FKC music contest for her vocal solo, duet, quartet, and piano solo. At districts she received Superior ratings on her vocal solo, duet, quartet, and piano solo. She received the Outstanding Performance at district music. Only one of these can be given per judge and the performer has to receive a perfect score. She was awarded this for her vocal solo of Ave Maria. She also was a part of the concert band and jazz band that received Superior ratings playing the trumpet in concert band and the bass guitar in jazz band as part of our rhythm section. These two multi-talented students were fantastic this spring and their accomplishments are nothing short of amazing!

The Semper Fidelis Marine Band Award is for musical achievement and leadership as a high school scholar. Candidates should be exemplary young citizens and role models for other students. They must be a high school senior - Hold a “first chair” position in the band - Be capable of performing as a soloist with the high school band - Be recognized as both an outstanding performer and as a truly outstanding young citizen. This award was given to Sage Williams.
The John Phillip Sousa award goes to an outstanding band member that makes a difference in the overall performance of our band. This person must be solid musically and show intangibles beyond their musical performance. This year’s winner has allowed us to play music that we haven’t been able to play in the past. They’ve been self motivated and willing to do whatever we need to perform our best. This award was given to Micah Eggleston.
The National School Choir award goes to an outstanding choir member that loves singing and shows a passion for choral music. They sing in honor choirs and perform in solos and small groups at contest. This student contributes as a leader in their section and mentor for younger students. The award was given to Jasmine Vasquez.
